  • How long do women take to pamper and get ready for their day?
  • Pampering for a date in college
  • Fashion tips for getting ready for a date

It is common knowledge that women spend a lot of time getting ready for their days, however, what is “a lot?”  According to a survey conducted by “The Telegraph” on average a woman will spend 3,276 hours over their lifetime putting on make-up and getting dressed.  That is compared to men, who spend 1,092 hours getting ready.  3,276 hours is A LOT of pampering time.

Now, being in college I also know that a fair share of those pampering hours accumulate right before going a date.  However, I do wonder how long college-age girls take to get ready for a date and how often they change their outfit.  Me personally, I take at least an hour with about five outfit changes, give or take.  I live with five other girls and wanted to see how long it took them to get ready, and I also wanted to get their boyfriend’s opions.  Check out the video!

One of the best things about being a college student is that fact that you get to live with roommates.  However, I may be impartial because do I live with five great girls.  Anyways, one of the perks of living with so many girls is the fact that we  have access to six different closets.  This adds time to the “date outfit” decision making process but gives us a lot of options.

Maureen Malone, a soon-to-be graduate at Cal Poly says, “Because I live with five other girls it provides for great dating outfits, so I usually try to borrow clothes.”  Borrowing clothes is an ideal way to put together trendy new outfits.  It gives you the ability to mix and match without buying new clothes.

No matter how much time it takes to get ready, the most important preparation comes with the outfit.  Here are a couple helpful tints when considering outfits for going on a date.

Fashion Tips For Getting Ready:

  • Make comfort a necessity.  You don’t want to be tugging at your clothes all night.
  • If you have one bold accessory, make that the focus of the outfit.  For example, a big detailed belt or a bold necklace.  Don’t overload on accessories.
  • Dress according to your personal style.
  • Don’t wear shoes that will be uncomfortable all night.
  • Ask for advice from the people around you.

Holiday Shopping Guide

With the holiday season right around the corner I wanted to make a map to highlight five specific downtown stores to shop at for the best deals in San Luis Obispo.  Stores are hoping for business to go up during the holiday season and I believe that this map can be helpful to holiday shoppers, especially out-of-town shoppers.  A lot of the boutiques downtown carry similar merchandise, so I highlighted the differences in each store while also providing a map to each store. So check out SLO Fashion’s Holiday Shopping Guide that highlights five stores in downtown SLO: H&G Clothing, Bella B, LuLu Luxe, Francie and Lucky LuLu’s.

SLO-ing Down?

Behind the Scenes

Story Highlights:

  • My experience in beginning film editing
  • My time on the streets collecting footage
  • What I would do differently

Well, let me start by saying the iPhone is incredibly compatible with making movies, however today I did not use my iPhone and spent way too much time on learning how to convert files from “.mts” to “.mov”.  However, despite the time spent it was a good learning experience for any future video projects.

Anyways, I wanted to focus on the effect that the recession has had on businesses in downtown SLO.  Overall it was a good experience, however I did run into difficulty in finding people willing to be interviewed.

People also don’t look very kindly at someone walking into a store with a video camera in hand, so it was nice that I was able to use H&G as my focal point.  Kelly was very agreeable and willing to do a quick interview.  However, when I went down to Lulu Luxe, another store downtown, the employee was hesitant in answering my questions, which was disappointing.  However, she did give me some information that I didn’t get on film.

In response to my question about how the economy has affected business downtown, she said, “Yes it has, however I think that Forever 21 coming in has affected it more than the economy.”  This was interesting to me since I am always curious as to how Forever 21 is affecting business downtown.  I may have to return later and ask her further questions about the matter.

While I was gathering footage I also sadly discovered that Therapy is closing downtown.  The rumor I heard is confirmed, and the owners have already posted a closing letter on the window facing the street.  Therapy was one of the more high-end clothing boutiques in SLO and is located on Higuera Street.

Anyways, I learned a lot about film editing and gathering footage, however in the future there are a couple things I would do differently.  I would be more persistent about getting interviews with employees at the stores downtown.  Also, for a variety of footage I would try and shoot video at different times of the day, so I could change the light sources.  I look forward to shooting more video and learning more along the way in the near future.
